Walk this way for some real get-away-from -it all gentle adventures. Take in seascapes or landscapes a great helping of history, flora and fauna beneath the most awe-inspiring Norfolk and Suffolk skies.

The wild beauty of the Norfolk Coast

At Hunstanton where the east faces west, Norfolk’s coast bears round towards the old fishing harbour of Blakeney, classic seaside Sheringham and Cromer. Dune-scapes lead on to marshlands and old parish harbours or staithes, now no more than creeks. Sea lavender colours the heaths and samphire clings to the beaches. Flocking wildfowl descend at Snettisham, Titchwell and along the wild, reedy landscapes on the stretch to Cley, most worthy of its designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The unspoilt beauty of the Suffolk Heritage Coast

Suffolk’s Southwold is sure to harbour memories as well as a boat or two. Heading south, across the estuary, bright beach huts soon give way to wilder coastline, ravaged and worn. Walberswick wallows in its former wealthy glories. Ruins cling near the cliffs at Dunwich as church bells, so the story goes, toll beneath the waves. Birds and twitchers flock to marshy Minsmere and everyone has to look up in Thorpeness , land of house-in-the-clouds magic. Interrupted by fishing villages, shingle beaches and spits, oyster beds and snaking creeks, the ancient coastline leads down to Felixstowe via Orford’s 12th century castle and the mysteries of Sutton Hoo’s famed ship burial.

Constable Country

Mellow and quintessentially English, the landscapes of the Dedham Vale and Stour Valley on the Essex/Suffolk borders are as timeless as they are beautiful: grazing cattle on water-meadows, dancing dragonflies and bridges where time just seems to stand still with you. Add to this half-timbered villages, impressive flint churches and the very same vistas which inspired the great 18th century landscape painter himself, it’s simply a perfect combination for a few days away.
